FERS Course on “Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) for a Net-Zero Future”

The Future Earth Research School – FERS is delighted to announce the Course on “Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) for a Net-Zero Future”, taking place from June 3 to 13, 2025, in Bertinoro (Italy). This course, coordinated by CMCC, will provide a comprehensive overview of carbon removal technologies and their role in achieving the Paris Agreement targets, exploring their potential, limitations, and implications for climate policy.

The course will cover the main CDR technologies, including water-based and land-based solutions, as well as technology-based and nature-based methods. Participants will gain insights into the technical and economic aspects of different techniques, including ocean fertilization, afforestation, and direct air capture.

Additionally, the course will address public perception, governance challenges, and the legal frameworks necessary for the responsible deployment of CDR. A key focus will be on the development of international standards for monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) of CDR solutions.

The course combines expert-led lectures with group activities, discussions, and networking opportunities, fostering collaboration among participants. A final mini research project will allow students to apply their knowledge and explore real-world applications of CDR technologies.

Directed by Soheil Shayegh, director of the Integration of Planetary and Industrial Carbon Cycle Program at CMCC Foundation, the course is designed for young researchers and professionals seeking to deepen their understanding of negative emissions and climate strategies.
