Advancing carbon market integration under Article 6

The EAERE Policy Outreach event “Advancing carbon market integration under Article 6, organised by the Florence School of Transnational Governance, the FSR: Florence School of Regulation and STG Climate, will take place on  May 7, 2025 at 09:30 – 11:00 am CEST in the Martti Ahtisaari Peace Hall in Palazzo Buontalenti in Florence (Italy).

The event is framed within the EUI Climate Week 2025.

The Conference

During this event, we will explore the current state of carbon market integration. Increasing the links and connections between Emissions Trading Systems (ETSs) could lead to significant environmental and economic gains. Yet, while new ETSs were implemented worldwide in previous years, their integration progressed more slowly due to divergent design features (e.g., intensity-based vs. cap-based systems). Meanwhile, COP29 in Baku has led to a common set of rules that operationalise Article 6 of the Paris Agreement to facilitate international cooperation and unlock financial support for developing countries. But can this development accelerate the integration of ETSs? In this context, who are realistic candidates for linking? To address these questions, a presentation will provide a starting point to discuss enablers and barriers for internationally integrated ETSs. A policy roundtable will follow the presentation.

This event is part of the annual Net Zero Carbon Market Policy Dialogue (NZCMPD) organised under the EU-funded LIFE COASE project framework. The policy dialogue aims to facilitate international carbon market cooperation between the EU and partner jurisdictions on key topics around net-zero regulation and integration of carbon markets. This event is the first part of the 2025 NZCMPD, focusing on the state of play on international carbon markets. The second part of the policy dialogue will take place in September and address the methods and findings of the latest ex-ante and ex-post assessments of the EU ETS and other ETSs worldwide.

Futures of overshoot: implications for climate pathways and mitigation strategies – IAMC webinar

Join the Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium – IAMC webinar on the “Futures of overshoot: implications for climate pathways and mitigation strategies” held by Massimo Tavoni (CMCC). The webinar is on April 10 at 2:00-3:00 pm CEST.

As we inexorably overshoot critical climate thresholds, the discussion about future emissions pathways and climate risks intensifies and becomes more complex. This webinar will review the history of overshoot for emission and mitigation pathways. We will discuss the multifaceted implications of overshoot for emissions, transforming energy and economic systems, and equity and technology. We will also review the literature quantifying the climate risks associated with overshoot. We will conclude by looking at ongoing community scenario activities relevant to the IPCC and identifying key research gaps and required methodological innovations.

PhD Summer School on Economic Foundations for Energy and Climate Policies 2025

The DIW Berlin, TU Berlin, and Université Libre de Bruxelles are pleased to announce the PhD Summer School on Economic Foundations for Energy and Climate Policies 2025 on the topic “Decarbonization Investment Under Uncertainty“. The School will take place on September 15-19, 2025 at DIW Berlin (Germany). The event is supported by EAERE.

The School

Part of a broader series with EUI-Florence School of Regulation, UCL, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, and Universidad Autonoma Madrid, the programme offers early-stage Economics PhD students advanced training in energy and climate policy using microeconomic methods. This year’s focus is on decarbonization investments under uncertainty, featuring lectures, interactive group projects, and a policy panel with policymakers.

This topic is crucial in today’s global context, where investment decisions are significantly impacted by policy volatility, technological advancements, and market dynamics. Understanding how uncertainty affects low-carbon technology investments is essential for designing effective climate policies and accelerating the energy transition. Research shows that policy uncertainty can delay green investments, potentially hindering progress towards climate goals.
