Mathias Reynaert is Professor of Economics at the Toulouse School of Economics. He obtained his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Leuven and the University of Antwerp in 2015, and joined the Toulouse School of Economics the same year. His research lies at the intersection of empirical industrial organization and environmental economics. He studies how firms, consumers, and markets respond to environmental and climate policies, and to the transition to cleaner technologies. His work combines detailed data with economic models to quantify the real-world effects of public policies. Applications include automobile markets, energy and electricity markets, protected areas, and the design and incidence of corrective policies.
The Nominating Committee designated Mathias Reynaert as the recipient of the European Achievement Award under the Age of Forty in recognition of his outstanding academic achievements and exceptional contributions to economics. A Full Professor of Economics at the Toulouse School of Economics, he has established himself as one of the leading scholars of his generation through a remarkable combination of research excellence, scientific leadership, and international recognition.
His publication record is exceptional, featuring articles in some of the most prestigious journals in the profession, including three papers in the Review of Economic Studies, one in the Journal of Econometrics, and two in AEJ: Economic Policy. Among numerous grants and distinctions, he was awarded a highly competitive ERC Starting Grant for the period 2023–2028. In addition to his research accomplishments, he plays an important role in shaping the profession through his editorial service, serving as Associate Editor of Econometrica and as a member of the Editorial Board of the Review of Economic Studies. Together, these achievements demonstrate his outstanding impact on economic research and his leadership within the academic community.
