ENERGY-IN-TRANSITION – Socio-Economic Challenges and Opportunities of the Energy Transition

The ERC Advanced Grant project “Socio-Economic Challenges and Opportunities of the Energy Transition (ENERGY-IN-TRANSITION)” aims to advance the frontier of energy and environmental economics by addressing the emerging socio-economic challenges and opportunities associated with the transition to a low-carbon economy. The project will pioneer research on the redesign of electricity markets and the regulation of Green Hydrogen, while examining the distributional impacts of climate and energy policies. By developing new theoretical models and generating novel empirical evidence on local impacts and solutions to mitigate potentially regressive effects, ENERGY-IN-TRANSITION will provide rigorous analysis and valuable guidance for some of the most pressing policy questions surrounding the Energy Transition. Natalia Fabra is Professor of Economics at Cemfi and an internationally recognised expert in industrial organization, energy economics, environmental economics, and competition policy. Her research has been published in leading journals, including the American Economic Review, Management Science, and The Economic Journal. She is a Research Fellow at CEPR and CESifo, a member of the European Commission’s Economic Advisory Group on Competition Policy, and has held numerous leadership positions within the economics profession, including serving as President of EARIE and the Spanish Economic Association. Following her ERC Consolidator Grant on electricity markets, this ERC Advanced Grant further recognises her outstanding contributions to research on energy markets and the economics of the green transition. BELIEFS – Climate-related Beliefs and Low-Carbon Transition Dynamics

The ERC Consolidator Grant project “BELIEFS – Climate-related Beliefs and Low-Carbon Transition Dynamics” investigates how climate-related beliefs and expectations shape investment decisions and influence the pace of the low-carbon transition. Combining surveys, experiments, empirical analysis, and dynamic macroeconomic modelling, the project develops new data and analytical tools to better understand how transition expectations are formed, how they affect decarbonisation pathways, and which policies can help align the expectations of economic actors with climate objectives. By addressing the role of beliefs in sustainability transitions, BELIEFS aims to provide important insights for designing more effective climate and economic policies. Project website
Emanuele Campiglio is Professor of Economics at the University of Bologna, Scientist at the RFF-CMCC European Institute on Economics and the Environment, and Visiting Fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science. His research focuses on the interactions between climate change, macro-financial systems, and sustainability transitions. He is the recipient of both an ERC Starting Grant (SMOOTH – Sustainable Finance for a Smooth Low-Carbon Transition) and an ERC Consolidator Grant (BELIEFS), reflecting his leading contributions to the economics of climate change and sustainable finance. He also serves as Editor of Ecological Economics, is a CESifo Research Network Fellow, and Academic Director of the EFFAS Certified Climate Risk Analyst Programme. Personal website
