WCERE 2018


The WCERE 2018 - 6th World Congress of Environmental and Resources Economists was a huge success with about 1,500 participants! It took place from the 25th to the 29th of June 2018 in Gothenburg, Sweden. Several of the sessions were recorded and are available to watch on the congress website: 

  1. Policy keynote lecture: "Environmental Policy and the Assault on Science" by Gina McCarthy, former administrator for the United States Environmental Protection Agency during the Obama presidency
  2. Plenary speech: “Compliance in Social Dilemmas: Insights from Experiments” by Lata Gangadharan, Monash University, Australia
  3. Plenary speech: "Climate policy that can live up to the Paris goals" with Jos Delbeke, former Director-General of the European Commission's DG Climate Action, Gina McCarthy, Hua Wang and E. Somanathan
  4. Plenary speech: “Climate Econometrics” by Sir David F. Hendry, Oxford University
  5. Policy session: “REACH and Beyond—Effective Policy Instruments to Regulate Hazardous Chemicals” including Karolina Skog, Minister of Environment, Sweden and Bjorn Hansen, Director, European Chemicals Agency
  6. Plenary speech: “Carbon Pricing in the Real World” by Meredith Fowlie, University of California, USA
  7. Keynote lecture: “Human Nature and Human Developmen” by Nava Ashraf, London School of Economics, UK

EAERE 2018 Awards 


Congratulations to all 2018 EAERE award winners! Awards were announced during WCERE 2018.


Professor Aart de Zeeuw and Professor Mordechai Shechter were honored with the European Lifetime Achievement Award in Environmental Economics in recognition of their lifelong contribution to the development of environmental and resource economics and to their important contributions to the promotion of research and the profession itself in the field. Their work is widely recognized as original and has inspired many new researchers.


Mr Yvo de Boer was honored with the European Practitioner Achievement Award in Applying Environmental Economics in in recognition of in recognition of his fundamental contribution to the international environmental policy debate, in particular on climate change issues and public policy.


Simon Dietz received the European Award for Researchers in Environmental Economics under the Age of Forty. He has significantly contributed to a broad range of innovative research topics in environmental economics. He has written excellent papers in climate economics with a focus on risk, discounting, and equity. The conclusions of his work are of great practical relevance, especially in the field of climate policy.


Fabio Antoniou and Roland Strausz are the winners of the EAERE Award for Outstanding Publication in the Journal Environmental and Resource Economics in year 2017, for their article Feed-in Subsidies, Taxation, and Inefficient Entry (DOI: 10.1007/s10640-016-0012-8)


The EAERE Award for ERC Grants laureates in the field of environmental and resource economics intends to recognize the scientific excellence of ERC individual grantees. This year's winners are:

  • Enrica De CianCa’ Foscari University of Venice and Foundation Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC), Italy. Project: ENERGY-A - Energy Use for Adaptation
  • Natalia FabraUniversity Charles III, Madrid, Spain. Project: ELECTRIC CHANGES - Current Tools and Policy Challenges in Electric Markets
  • Tatiana FilatovaUniversity of Twente, Netherlands. Project: SCALAR - Scaling up behavior and autonomous adaptation for macro models on climate change damage assessment

GGKP Expert Connect

As a Green Growth Knowledge Platform member, EAERE has been asked to contribute to the GGKP Expert Connect service. The Expert Connect service allows developing country governments and institutions that support these governments to engage directly with global experts who have agreed to provide up to 20 hours a year of pro bono advice.

  • Renewable Energy Target: EU agrees to increase renewable energy target for 2030 to 32%, including a review clause by 2023 for an upward revision. Read the press release
  • Energy Efficiency Target: The new regulatory framework includes an energy efficiency target for the EU for 2030 of 32.5% with an upwards revision clause by 2023. Read the press release.
  • Simplified, robust and transparent governance for the Energy Union: Negotiators from the Commission, the European Parliament and the Council reach an ambitious political agreement on the governance of the Energy Union. This regulation will ensure that the objectives of the Energy Union, especially the EU's 2030 energy and climate targets – reduction of 40% of greenhouse gas emissions, a minimum of 32% renewables in the EU energy mix and the 32.5% goal of energy efficiency savings - are achieved by setting out a political process defining how EU countries and the Commission work together, and how individual countries should cooperate, to achieve the Energy Union's goals.   • R&I budget: Commission proposes most ambitious Research and Innovation program yet. For the next long-term EU budget 2021-2027, the Commission is proposing €100 billion for research and innovation. Read the press release
  • CO2 emissions of heavy-duty vehicles: The Council adopts regulation on monitoring and reporting of CO2 emissions as well as fuel consumption of new heavy-duty vehicles. This regulation forms part of the EU's overall efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, and it is a step towards a competitive low carbon economy. Read the press release
