European Association
of Environmental and Resource Economists
President Correspondence
N. 10 - President Correspondence
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
It is a great pleasure to communicate with you as the new president of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists. EAERE has come a long way since its inception in 1990. It has established itself as an internationally recognised scientific association which encompasses and organizes activities and events that are acknowledged world wide.
I believe that EAERE’s success is due to the fact that we all share a bond in addition to our common scientific interests. I believe that our desire to improve the natural environment we are living in, and to enhance and preserve it for future generations - a desire which cuts across disciplines - creates an additional bond which makes EAERE successful.
Thanks to the support of all of you, and especially the efforts made by the past Presidents and Council members, we have also managed to establish an international scientific association organized on an efficient and professional basis. Here I would like to especially mention the contribution of my predecessor and good friend, Frank Convery. The establishment of a permanent secretariat and the efforts of our Secretary General Monica Eberle have given EAERE the ability to provide a number of services to its members.
In the attached file you will find the rich portfolio of individual and collective benefits EAERE is offering its members for 2006. In particular, EAERE members are entitled to a reduced registration fee for the Third World Congress of Environmental and Resource Economists, to be held in July in Kyoto (see http://www.worldcongress3.org/). Those EAERE members who are graduate or doctoral students, or residents in developing, emerging and Eastern European countries are entitled to a further discount. This year the Association membership fee is not bundled with the conference registration fee. Therefore, I would like to invite you to join EAERE through our website (http://www.eaere.org/formdata06.html) before registering to the Kyoto Conference. The deadline for early registration fee is April 30th.
Dear colleagues, the strength and driving force of EAERE is its membership, so we should make every effort to develop a strong and active involvement by our members. EAERE ended the year 2005 with 587 members (139 members more than 2004), and the Council set the target for 2006 at 700 members. Achieving this objective is important in terms of deepening the presence and effectiveness of environmental and resource economics, and supporting the efforts of our association to develop and fulfil its potential.
I think that new members will find EAERE a scientifically strong and friendly association that has much to offer. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new members and especially our junior colleagues who became members with the opportunity of our summer school; we hope that you will be with us for a long time. I would also like to thank our renewing members - by renewing your subscription you make EAERE stronger and you give us the impetus to move forward. Finally, I would like to ask any members who have not yet renewed their subscription to please do so. I’d especially like to ask those of you who will not be attending the Third World Congress to take this opportunity to renew your membership.
On the occasion of the Third World Congress, I will have the honour of presenting the Eric Kempe Award in Environmental and Resource Economics for 2006. Nominations of papers published in calendar years 2004-2005 can be submitted by sending complete reference of the papers to eaere@eaere.org by April 30th.
In closing, I would like to thank you all for your support of EAERE. I look forward to meeting many of you in Kyoto, where we can expect a productive and stimulating meeting.
